Upskilling Students with AI Education

The rapid pace of developments in AI has already begun to disrupt different industries. While technology is helping to replace antiquated systems with agile, innovative tools, it is also set to impact jobs and millions of workers of the future. While popular opinion from technophobes suggests machines will entirely take over every job, the truth is a bit complex. Hence, placing a great amount of focus on the future job roles, schools and colleges are increasingly adopting courses on coding and other STEM subjects as a part of their curriculum.

Growing numbers of primary as well as secondary schools are now teaching their pupils how to code; this is only one tiny element of AI and a skill which will be “old hat” by the time they enter the workforce. Some schools are also recruiting tech experts as teachers to help introduce AI to the classroom. However, making that shift will require recognition not just at the school and district levels, but at the state and federal policy levels—particularly when it comes to accountability and what students are expected to know.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) has made it easier to facilitate these shifts, but it will likely still require resources for aspects like classroom upgrades as well as teacher training. Nonetheless, the education sector is ripe to adopt new AI-driven curricula to ramp up students’ knowledge about modern technologies.
